To commemorate the centennial anniversary of Zeppelin, this special edition watch combines classic elements to resemble a modern design. Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s idea to build large airships was first documented in 1874. With determination and hard work, he built the most successful airships of all time as they were composed of triangular lattice girders covered with fabric containing separate gas cells.
The 7640-1, as well as all of the watches in this collection, resembles an early 20th century look, while also showcasing a modern style. With various types of watches in this collection, including mechanical and quartz movements or a big date display and a tachymeter scale, the “100 Jahre Zeppelin” collection embodies the intelligence and significance of Ferdinand von Zeppelin with reliable and productive watches.
The 7640-1 weighs 73 grams with a case diameter of 42 x 11 mm, which is a bit heavier than most of the watches we have reviewed. Nonetheless, this watch presents itself with class and elegance as it houses a reliable movement and includes effective features, which we will discuss shortly.
The silver polished stainless steel case with a screw in case back has a water resistance of 5 ATM (50 meters). The case back features an image of the Zeppelin logo with “100 Jahre” written below. The thin bezel portrays a polished look as the dial reflects on the domed crystal.
Its powered by the Swiss Ronda 6203.B quartz movement with 1 jewel. This movement measures at 26 x 3 mm thick and features hours, minutes, central seconds, a date, dual time zone, a telemeter and tachymeter scale.
The 373 battery has a life expectancy of 40 months, which is just over 3 years and has a motor accuracy of -10/+20 seconds per month.
This busy silver dial has various unique features. The tachymeter and telemeter scales lie on the outer ring of the dial. A tachymeter scale measures distance based on speed between 60 to 360 miles, while a telemeter scale measures distance of an event that can be both seen and heard, such as a lightning bolt, between 1 to 19 km.
A big date display is located at the 12 o’clock position and a dual time zone sub-dial located at the 6 o’ clock position. The dial features small bold Arabic numerals for the minute indicators. The tachymeter scale showcases larger numerals in 5, 10, 20 and 30 mile intervals as the scale increases, while the telemeter scale below it is showcased in smaller numerals in 1 km intervals.
Its black Breguet-style hands portray an elegant look suitable with every ensemble you own. The dual time zone features stainless steel hands with black Arabic numerals in 2-hour intervals.
Its dark brown 22 mm alligator-style padded leather strap features white stitching on the sides and a buckle closure for a more secure fit. The back of the strap states, “Fine calfskin handmade in Germany.”
The stainless steel crown located at the 3 o’clock position allows you to adjust the time and date display, while the seconds stainless steel crown below located at the 4 o’clock position allows you to operate the dual time zone. They both have ridged edges with a curved clear silver front as the second crown is about half the size of the main crown.
The domed hardened mineral crystal makes this watch suitable for everyday use. Mineral crystals are more durable than hesalite and acrylic crystals. Because this crystal is domed, it acts as a vital protector of the dial as the edge of the dial reflects on the crystal.
With its durable materials, significant historical background and unique features, this watch is sure to bring all of the attention to your wrist.
