Marathon Jeep Willys SSGPM - Officer’s Field Watch

A Historic Collaboration: Jeep x Marathon Watches

Since 1941, Jeep and Marathon have followed parallel paths, creating iconic and reliable tools for the Allied forces. To commemorate this shared history, Marathon has released a special series of Jeep watches. The collection features two models of the Search and Rescue (SAR) watches which are inspired by the Jeep Rubicon, with 41mm cases. These watches are offered with either the Swiss Automatic Sellita SW200-1 movement or a quartz version powered by the ETA F06.412 movement.

But the true highlight of this collection is the new interpretation of Marathon’s Officer’s Field Watch, inspired by the Jeep Willys. These timepieces come with two movement options: the reliable Swiss quartz ETA F06.402 and a Swiss-made manual mechanical movement from Sellita. The quartz model retails for around $500, while the mechanical version is priced at $650.

Presentation:

The packaging is functional and free from unnecessary bling. After removing the cardboard sleeve, you'll find a tin metal box with a sliding lid. Inside, you'll discover the instructions, the warranty, and, of course, the watch itself. Marathon is the only company I know that provides a three-piece leather strap in the original packaging, making the strap adjustable to fit nearly all wrist sizes straight out of the box.

Case & Case Back:

Marathon’s Officer’s Field Watches have always intrigued me, thanks to their unique 316L stainless steel cases with bold curves and their parkerized finish, which not only reduces light reflection but also increases corrosion resistance. While I’ve found the standard 36mm case a bit small for my taste, the new Jeep Willys Officer Watch features a larger, 41mm case, which feels just right. The case design has also been slightly refined with sharper angles compared to the smaller model.

The case measures 41mm in diameter and is 11mm thick, with a 20mm lug width and a lug-to-lug distance of 48mm. Despite its robust appearance, the watch weighs just 81 grams, including the strap. Notably, the case lacks a bezel, rising instead into a funnel shape that effectively protects the sapphire glass. Marathon’s design prioritizes practicality, ensuring the watch meets the demands of ground operations.

The solid caseback is engraved with key details such as:

  • Water resistance (50 meters)
  • The Jeep by Marathon logo
  • Swiss-made label
  • Additional technical information

The drilled lugs on the side should make strap changes a breeze.

Movement:

The Jeep Willys Officer Watch is available with two movement options: a Swiss quartz ETA F06.402 and a hand-wound Swiss-made Sellita SW210-1. The Sellita movement, with 18 jewels, operates at a frequency of 28,800 beats per hour and offers a 45-hour power reserve. It features a hacking second hand and boasts an accuracy range of +/- 7 to +/- 20 seconds per day.

Dial & Hands:

This new Officer’s Field Watch departs from the design of the 36mm General Purpose model, opting for a cleaner look by removing the inner 24-hour markers. Marathon also skips the usual tritium markers, instead applying MaraGlo lume, which mimics the aged patina of vintage radium. The dial’s numerals and the Jeep logo are similar to those on the Jeep Rubicon SAR model.

The sword-shaped hour and minute hands are painted with the same MaraGlo treatment, matching the numerals perfectly. Thanks to the high-frequency movement, the long red second hand glides smoothly around the dial. The minute track is placed on the outer ring, while Marathon’s branding and the “Swiss Made” label sit neatly at 6 o’clock. There’s no date window, preserving the watch's clean, classic look.

The black flat dial contrasts beautifully with the hands, markers, and lettering, making the watch easy to read in any light.

Crystal:

The flat sapphire crystal offers a clear, unobstructed view of the dial. While there is no anti-reflective coating, the sapphire provides solid protection without compromising the watch’s legibility.

Crown:

The 6mm crown is located at 3 o’clock, with a matte finish and an unbranded design. It’s easy to grip and turn, which is crucial for daily winding. After three weeks of wearing this watch, I can say that winding the crown has become a daily pleasure thanks to its smooth operation. Overall, the watch is very comfortable for everyday wear.

Strap:

Each watch comes with a 20mm dark brown 3-piece leather strap, made from Crazy Horse leather. Despite its lightweight feel, the strap is durable and easy to adjust with one hand. The stainless-steel pin buckle matches the case finish and is engraved with the company’s logo.

Conclusion:

Few brands can claim a history as rich as Jeep and Marathon, both of which have been supplying essential products to the U.S. military since 1941. Marathon’s new Field Watch is perfect for daily wear, with its vintage-inspired design and modern reliability. At a price point of $650, this watch offers exceptional value, combining Swiss craftsmanship with rugged durability. If you’re a fan of vintage aesthetics and dependable performance, don’t miss your chance to own this piece of history. You won’t regret it.
